ON 04.11.24, FOODSCAPES OPENS AT LA CASA DE LA ARQUITECTURA
Opening event: Thursday 11 April 2024
Time: 8 pm
Venue: La Arquería de Nuevos Ministerios, Madrid
Every time we eat, we connect our palate to a myriad of remote locations: supermarkets, greenhouses, farms, warehouses, logistical networks, cold chains, landfills... Despite their immense importance, these mundane architectures seldom receive the attention they deserve. Yet in a world where the molecular becomes tectonic and every bite reverberates across the planet, the redesign of our food systems with their ecosystemic implications in mind is more urgent than ever.
By eating, we digest territories. FOODSCAPES proposes a journey to the architectures that feed the world: from the domestic laboratories of our kitchens to the vast operational landscapes that nourish our cities.
Through an audiovisual project of five short films, a documentary archive resembling a experimental cookbook, and a collaborative research platform, FOODSCAPES explores the agro-architectural context of Spain – europe's food engine – to address issues of global scope. The exhibition examines the past and present of our food systems and the architectures that shape them, looking towards the future to consider alternative models: those capable of feeding the world without devouring the planet.
Curated by Eduardo Castillo-Vinuesa and Manuel Ocaña, FOODSCAPES continues and expands the curatorial project presented at the Spanish Pavilion during the 18th Venice International Architecture Biennale.
